CHIMCO was established as an export-oriented state-owned company back in 1967. It has always been and still remains the only urea-producing plant in Bulgaria. The development of the Tchiren gas field, not far from the town of Vratsa, had crucial importance for the choice of the erection site. Chimco has used locally produced gas until 1974 and Russian gas ever afterwards.
CHIMCO is situated in the North Western part of Bulgaria at about 100 km apart from the capital and 15 km from Tchiren gas field, which is used for natural gas storage at present. It is situated also close to Mezdra, the main railway junction of the country, and not far from Vidin and Lom, significant ports on Danube riverside.CHIMCO has its own means of transport and store capacity, its own terminal and the appropriate facilities on the Black Sea coast, at Varna Port, for bulk urea export, including a warehouse for 30,000 tonnes and 190 hopper-wagons bulk urea capacity that provide a considerable production and trading flexibility.
CHIMCO’s facilities for production are built within the period 1965-1967, using technological engineering and equipment of leading West-European companies as ICI, Humphreys & Glasgow, and Stamicarbon, SNC – Lavalin Europe - Evants Coppee Rust, Haldor Topsoe, Snamproggetti, Snia Viscoza, Linde. As a result of this, and thanks to the efficient maintenance the key equipment has been operated reliably and trouble-free for the entire 40 years history of the company. The technical audit of the production facilities made by Bulgarian and foreign experts is favourable.
The economic and political realities of the 70’s shaped up Chimco as a typical nitrogen fertilizer manufacturer. The staple products include ammonia, urea, oxygen and nitrogen. On the basis of the main raw material (natural gas) CHIMCO developed various production trains, closing the technological cycle to a qualified treatment of the waste products and obtaining argon, methane, krypton, xenon, carbon dioxide with a back-flow of the hydrogen to the ammonia cycle. In 1967 the company started the production of ammonia and urea, in 1976 the production of argon. Since 1984 CHIMCO has also been manufacturing catalysts for the ammonia production, in 1992 the carbon dioxide.

CHIMCO is a large-scale producer of nitrogen fertilizer and various other chemicals. The product range of CHIMCO is targeted at agriculture, as a consumer of urea and plant protection agents on one side, and on the other side at producers, using Chimco products as raw materials for other production plants. Chimco is the only manufacturer in Bulgaria of urea, carbon disulphide, ammonium bisulphide, argon and catalysts for the nitrogen plants. It ‘s production capacity for ammonia is 500,000 t/y. CHIMCO is one of the biggest exporters of urea in Europe, with one million tons per year urea capacity, sending about 800,000 t/year abroad. Modern technologies along with high process automation guarantee product of excellent quality.
